New controls, more powerful IPS and emission-controlled industrial engines
In 2010 a number of important new products were introduced: industrial engines for mobile applications featuring SCR catalytic reduction; a new generation of the D3 marine diesel; the very powerful IPS1050 and IPS1200; and not least a completely new range of controls featuring new smart functionality.

SCR catalytic emission reduction
Volvo Penta presents a wide range of off-road diesel engines compliant with the upcoming 2011 emission standards. The range uses SCR-technology that combines increased power and fuel consumption improved by 5-10% compared with today’s engines. SCR converts the exhaust NOx into nitrogen gas and water vapor, before releasing them harmlessly through a catalytic converter. The system does this by automatically adding up to 5% AdBlue® to the exhaust gases and then passing the mixture through a catalytic converter.

IPS1050 and IPS1200
With the IPS system, Volvo Penta has revolutionized the market for conventional inboard installations. The IPS program is now being expanded still further. With new and larger drive units coupled to the 13-liter engine, Volvo Penta launches a further two power classes, IPS1050 and IPS1200.

With forward-facing and efficient propellers, the IPS system is the undisputed market leader in pod installations. This year, Volvo Penta is launching a third stage based on the Volvo Group’s 13-litre engines. The two new IPS drive packages generate the equivalent of 1,050 and 1,200 horsepower respectively, compared with conventional inboard installations. This means that Volvo Penta can now offer the IPS system for boats all the way up to 100+ feet.

Larger engines with higher power output and higher torque make great demands on the drive units. With this in mind, Volvo Penta has developed a larger and even more powerful IPS drive unit as well as a completely new series of propellers for the IPS1050 and IPS1200.

New controls and more smart functions
EVC-D, the fourth and latest version of the company’s electronic platform, offers a complete series of new controls and new functions, all easily managed through push-buttons on the control head.

The new controls are robust and ergonomic. Facing the driver is the push-button panel where the driver can easily select the cruise control, single-lever mode, low-speed mode, Powertrim Assistant, throttle only. With multiple helm stations, the “control station” can be activated as well as locked, so that it’s not possible to activate another station by mistake. With sterndrive there is a drive trim button on the lever (port lever in twin) to control single or twin drives.

New D3 marine diesel – better at everything
Volvo Penta’s new generation of D3 is flexible to say the least. There are no fewer than five inboard versions from 110 to 220 hp with the two smallest being low-revolution engines for non-planing boats. Aquamatic Sterndrive is available in four versions, 140 to 220 hp with SX single or DPS Duoprop drive. Electronic shift and throttle and even lower levels of emissions, noise and vibrations are among the new features.
