Volvo Penta introduces a number of smart features to facilitate boating. The IPS system reaches 10,000 delivered units while the equally successful Aquamatic celebrates 50 years. Volvo Penta also powers Formula One racing and a legendary research vessel.
Smart accessories that make boating simpler and more environmentally friendly
Volvo Penta EVC (electronic vessel control) is a CAN-bus-based network that integrates the engine, transmission and controls with instruments and displays as well as smart functions, e.g. a trip computer and joystick maneuvering.
It takes only five minutes to install trip computer functions in a boat equipped with Volvo Penta EVC. The dealer just connects a special tool and downloads the appropriate software. And updating the engine’s control system or other functions on board is just as simple.
10,000 Volvo Penta IPS delivered
It was designed to be a revolution in boating. And it became one. This spring, Volvo Penta has delivered the 10,000th IPS system since the start in 2005. Introduction of the Volvo Penta IPS (inboard performance system) – the world’s first pod system – meant a fundamental change in the marine industry.
The legendary ocean researcher and diver Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s research ship “Calypso” is currently being restored in France. Fully overhauled, the vessel will sail as the flagship for the Cousteau Society and help inform the general public about the seas and the environment all over the world.
The whole renovation project is being carried out in as green a way as possible, with an important part being the choice of engines: the new Volvo Penta marine diesels are way below current emissions regulations and also very fuel efficient to minimize CO2 emissions.
D13 with 900 hp
For almost a decade, the Volvo Penta D12 has been the leading engine for motor yachts in the 50-foot class. Volvo Penta is now introducing its new, more powerful, more fuel-efficient and cleaner successor: the Volvo Penta D13.
With its 900 horsepower, it is Volvo Penta’s most powerful engine so far for leisure boats. A characteristic of Volvo Penta’s inboard diesels is their high torque from low rpm – a crucial property for rapid and safe acceleration. The new D13-900 is equipped with new dual-stage turbo technology. The first stage is a twin-entry turbo with pulse charging – the power in each exhaust pulse is used to provide pulse pressure – which results in a very high torque from low rpm. At higher rpm, a second turbo kicks in so that the engine retains its power even at high rpm. The D13-900 reaches its maximum torque of 3300 Nm at only 1300 rpm/min – a uniquely high torque for this class of engine.
Powering Formula 1
When the Formula 1 race in Abu Dhabi took place, 44 Volvo Penta diesel engines provided the electrical power for the lighting around the track. The Abu Dhabi race was the final race of the season and it was finished in evening twilight. A total of 44 diesel generator sets were placed around the race track. Of these, 32 were powered by 9-liter engines and 12 were powered by 16-liter engines, all supplied by Volvo Penta.
A total of 12,500 kW was generated by the gensets, each one equipped with a special sand filter to be able to safely supply power.
