Versatility

The D16 is Volvo Penta’s most powerful engine, with a range from 368 to 551 kW. Applications span from complete gensets and auxiliary installations to propulsion systems, multiple installations,  diesel-electric or hybrid propulsion systems. You have a choice of control and cooling systems. The Volvo Penta D16 is designed for easy fitting of an after-treatment system. The compact design of the engine makes it space efficient, which simplifies installation.

Intelligent and open

Monitoring and control systems can be Volvo Penta’s proprietary, easily integrated systems (EVC or MCC) or the system of your choice, in which case the engine is delivered with an open CAN solution. Whatever your choice, this versatility enables integration with any ship automation system and any user interface. The benefit of the open CAN is an easier installation process for the OEM or yard , and customers will appreciate the ability to customize the control system — a feature previously unavailable.

Available with a range  from 368 to 551 kW, the upgraded D16 can be used in applications spanning from complete gensets and auxiliary installations to propulsion systems, multiple installations, a base for diesel-electric or hybrid solutions. The Open CAN system also offers an open and intelligent monitoring and control system interface, easily integrated with any user interface. Together, these key features make Volvo Penta’s latest D16 engine a versatile, easily adaptable system that is high performing on every level.

More onboard power

Volvo Penta’s D16 engine previously contained an 80 amp compact alternator, but the updated 110 amp alternator offers 40% increased capacity, even at low revs. The new alternator offers increased charge capacity and more onboard power.

More robust engine

A wide package of design improvements like a new exhaust clamp at the turbo outlet and new stud joints – improvements that make Volvo Penta’s latest D16 even more robust.

Increased onboard comfort

New engine rubber mounts, type approved by DNV, are thicker and designed to withstand a higher load.. Reducing sound and vibrations, the new characteristics will increase onboard passenger comfort — especially important in crew transfer vessels.

Safety upgrades

The top mount controls and 7 “ displays have been updated to exceed the DNV location class for deck mounting fulfilling IP67. This protects vessels with an exposed helm from water intrusion and provides a robust resistance to particle ingress.


 

Complete, type-approved single-supplier system

The type-approved Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system features defined control stations with priority setting and “transfer underway” procedure according to DNV requirements. In order to fulfill the monitoring requirements the 7” Color display is complemented with an alarm handling display including an extended alarm log.
The EVC system features manual engine sync on and off to support complex maneuvers where the captain would like full control of both engines individually e.g. pilot break out maneuver. For vessels equipped with ship systems, the alarm handling can be integrated in the ship system, but requires the Volvo Penta Information gateway (IGW) and application work to secure the integration.
