This year's dominating event is the introduction of the revolutionary Volvo Penta IPS. The boat industry is facing its greatest change since Volvo Penta launched the Aquamatic Drive in 1959.

The new Volvo Penta IPS

Faster, stronger, more comfortable, more fuel-efficient and as easy to steer as an ordinary car. Boats of the future will be better in all respects - thanks to Volvo Penta's revolutionary new IPS propulsion system.

Volvo Penta's IPS - Inboard Performance System - is raising the boat industry to totally new levels in terms of fuel economy, performance, safety, comfort and ease of handling. This is because the ingenious design of the IPS system in all respects improves the characteristics of the boats in which it is installed.

Five new engines for sailing and displacement boats

Volvo Penta introduces five new engines for sailing and displacement boats: D1-13, 20 and 30, D2-40 and D4-180. In just a few years, Volvo Penta has introduced a completely new engine program for sailing and displacement boats. The engines in the new D-series are modern, low-emission engines that complies with the emission requirements introduced in the EU and the USA as from 2006.

Volvo Penta's new 16-litre engine

Volvo Penta's new 16-litre engine represents a technological shift for many in commercial shipping. With the assistance of electronics and state-of-the-art technology, Volvo Penta now has a marine diesel engine with outstanding torque and more than 150 h.p. in output than its predecessor.

A few examples of this year's deliveries

• Volvo Penta secures an order from South Korea for more than 300 industrial diesel engines.

• The newly established Turkish boat builder Numarine Performance Motoryachts is turning to the Volvo Penta D9 to boost its investment in exclusive high-speed leisure boats.

• Volvo Penta signs two important orders from the Indian shipbuilding industry.

• Volvo Penta receives an order from Consafe Offshore for the delivery of diesel powered gensets to the Safe Bristolia accommodation platform.

Increase in Chinese production

Volvo Penta expands its Chinese engine plant, resulting in an increase in production capacity to about 10,000 engines annually. The plant is jointly owned by Volvo Penta and its Chinese partner, Wuxi Diesel Engine Works.

2005 - the award year

• Volvo Penta's Inboard Performance System (IPS) receives the 2005 Volvo Technology Award. It goes to the group of Volvo Penta and Volvo Powertrain engineers responsible for developing the IPS drive system.
• Volvo Penta gasoline sterndrives rank highest in customer satisfaction, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2005 Marine Engine Competitive Information Study (SM).
• The newly launched QL Boat Trim System is awarded a prestigious innovation award in the US as the best innovation in the propulsion category.
• Each year the Italian boating magazine Vela e Motore awards the most important innovation in the marine industry. This year, the award goes to the Volvo Penta IPS.
• For the second consecutive year, Volvo Penta in the US receives the Excellent Customer Satisfaction award from the NMMA boating association.
• Volvo Penta IPS is recognized as one of the Top 100 innovations of the Year by the U.S magazine Popular Science.
• Volvo Penta IPS, is rewarded with the Best of the Year Award by the American boating magazine Motor Boating.
