The Shipman 50 sailboat has been named “Yacht of the Year” in Europe. The yacht is delivered with Volvo Penta’s D2-55 diesel engine, which will also be installed in the racing yachts competing in the next Volvo Ocean Race.
The leading European boat magazines chose the “Yacht of the Year” in Europe in conjunction with the international boat show that recently concluded in Düsseldorf, Germany. The winner was the 50-foot Slovenian Shipman 50 sailboat, which won the award for its creative design and impressive performance, among other features.
The Shipman 50 is delivered with Volvo Penta’s 55-horsepower D2-55 diesel engine, with which Volvo Penta has achieved considerable success in sailboats during the past few years. Volvo Penta has gradually increased its market shares and is currently the market leader in several sailboat segments.
Next year, the D2-55 will have the chance to show its capabilities under the toughest conditions imaginable, since the standard version of the engine will be installed as propulsion engine in all the competing yachts that come to the starting line when the Volvo Ocean Race gets under way in November 2005.
During autumn 2003, Volvo Penta also launched the 75 horsepower D2-75, which is a performance developed engine from the same engine family. The D2-75’s low vibration level, combined with its outstanding torque, have already resulted in an enthusiastic reception from trade press and boatbuilders.
