Imagine over 140 large forestry machines together proving their worth in their natural environment – the forest. Elmia Wood is a forestry fair like no other and is the right spot for sharing trends and innovations in the industry. Of course, Volvo Penta was there in order to, among other things, present our new D8 Stage V engine. In this article, I will summarize the fair and describe how an engine operating in the forest industry can be optimized for both forestry and the environment.
Trends and innovations in forestry at Elmia Wood 2017
Elmia Wood 2017 can look back at yet another successful fair that took place between 7 and 10 of June. Over 40 000 visitors and some 550 exhibitors from 28 countries made their way to the world’s largest forestry fair, located in the forest outside of Jönköping, Sweden. The exhibitors showcased their products on an area of 131 000 square metres and the visitors enjoyed the fair from a seven kilometres long forest trail. Elmia Wood aims to gather the world’s forestry professionals to share and discuss the hottest trends and latest innovations in the industry. It is a place that allows you to be inspired, discuss ideas and meet new and existing partners. In addition, the fair is a world-class industry gathering with exciting competitions and attractive prizes.
Load and transport – how to get raw material from the forest to the customers
The fair is divided in small-scale and large-scale forestry, covering everything from chainsaws to forwarders, harvesters and wood-chippers. In addition, this year’s fair introduced three new sections: Load and Transport, Drone Zone and Hunting. Load and Transport included everything that has to do with the logistics of getting the raw material from the forest to the industrial customers. The section focused on construction and maintenance of forest roads, transportation of wood raw materials and the handling of wood raw materials at woodyards and terminals. As drones are entering the forestry world, the Drone Zone enabled the visitors to see and experience how this new technology can be used in the forest industry. Also, the Hunting section attracted many of the hunters that visited the fair.
Stage V – new emission limits for diesel and spark-ignited engines
Many of the world’s leading suppliers had unique premiers of new products at the fair, and Volvo Penta was no exception. At Elmia Wood, Volvo Penta revealed a new 8-liter diesel engine with aftertreatment system as the next model in its EU Stage V range. The 8-liter off-road industrial diesel engine has a power output of up to 235 kW. The Stage V version of this engine is compact and has a perfectly matched exhaust aftertreatment system, to meet new EU Stage V emissions regulations. It has been developed for the future needs of customers and offers world-class fuel efficiency with maximized uptime via the optimized regeneration strategy.
“With Stage V regulations approaching, we are continuing to move forward with our solution,” says Johan Carlsson, Chief Technology Officer for Volvo Penta. “Our Stage V concept is designed for customers to reap the benefits of the combination of an 8-litre engine which reduces fuel consumption and an exhaust aftertreatment system that minimizes emissions. The solution is easy to install, easy to operate and easy to maintain. It is optimized for our customers’ future needs.”
A compact diesel engine with a matched exhaust aftertreatment system
Stage V regulations for Europe will be implemented in 2019, requiring new emission limits for diesel and spark-ignited engines. The scope of the legislation is set to widen as engines below 19 kW and above 560 kW will be regulated for the first time. And while current Stage IV regulations limit the overall mass of particle emissions, Stage V will also constrain the number of particles emitted.
The new D8 Stage V engine has been equipped with a fixed geometry turbo, which contributes to reduced complexity. It achieves excellent fuel economy thanks to its efficient common rail injection and has a power output of 160-235 kW. Maximum power and torque are available at low rpm, and the robust engine generates low noise. The air inlet throttle, together with the uncooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and the electrical exhaust pressure governor (EPG) deliver highly effective heat management of the engine. This enables the system to function without the need to raise the temperature by injecting fuel into the exhaust stream.
With this approach, the exhaust gas has an optimal temperature when it passes through the exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS). Low heat rejection from the complete system means that less cooling is required.
Maximised productivity and increased fuel efficiency
Volvo Penta’s Stage V engine and EATS are designed to work together to maximize passive regeneration during normal operation. With Volvo Penta’s Stage V approach, there is no high-temperature regeneration due to the fact that sulfur regeneration in the SCR catalyst is not required, only soot regeneration is needed to clean the DPF. No additional fuel injector (7th injector) for sulfur regeneration is needed. This leads to increased fuel efficiency and uptime for operators.
“With our EATS solution, there is no need for daily stand-still regeneration,” says Carlsson. “Passive regeneration enables increased efficiency and maximizes uptime for customers. This has been a major driver in our product development in order to provide a solution that helps maximize productivity for the end-users of our products in all the different applications where they operate.”
