Volvo Penta delivers support to customers and society during COVID-19 pandemic23/04/2020
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Volvo Penta is doing what it can to make a difference by protecting employees, supporting customers and helping society. In these uncertain times, the company is continuing to deliver essential services to customers and some employees are volunteering to produce protective equipment for healthcare workers.
In line with the rest of the Volvo Group and to ensure the safety, health and wellbeing of employees, customers and the general public during the COVID-19 pandemic, Volvo Penta has adapted its ways of working and initiated activities to help society. This includes volunteers producing protective equipment for healthcare workers and utilizing technology to connect with customers and dealers to make sure their businesses can continue to function. One example of this is the online training sessions that are being held to teach thousands of participants about engine operation and maintenance.
Volvo Penta teams are also putting a lot of effort into delivering customer support and spare parts distribution, despite the current necessary constraints. This is to ensure customers can keep delivering essential services to society, such as those who are using Volvo Penta genset engines to power temporary hospitals built to care for COVID-19 patients.
Volvo Penta dealers are also finding creative new ways of working. At the Volvo Penta Center in Finland, Suomen Venehuolto Oy, the main site is closed but the team has established a container set-up to support customers and provide spare parts. The containers have separate rooms, plexiglass and microphones to ensure safety guidelines are adhered to.
Providing essential support
Additionally, Volvo Penta and the Volvo Group are taking action to deliver support to society. One example of this is the Group making its 3D printing and assembly facilities available for employees who want to volunteer to produce Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers. So far, Volvo volunteers have produced thousands of essential items, such as protective visors, aprons and ear guards – which help to alleviate pain caused by wearing face masks.
As well as providing PPE support, Volvo Penta and the Volvo Group are also undertaking other initiatives to help communities. These include providing laptops to families on low incomes so children can continue their schoolwork, donating to the Red Cross International appeal, supporting food banks and sponsoring Hack the Crisis, a hackathon to design, test and develop ideas to fight COVID-19.
