Leonardo Bassilichi has his own vision about boating. When he is at sea, he prefers to maneuver his 94-foot-long yacht all by himself.
For Leonardo Bassilichi, one of the most crucial elements when investing in a new boat is to be able to drive it himself. With the Amer 94’ and the Volvo Penta IPS system, he was able to upgrade to a larger yacht and still be his own captain.
“I wanted a bigger yacht, but at the same time I didn’t want to lose my personal vision about boating and to drive the boat myself. The IPS system, as well as the boat itself, makes it incredibly easy to drive,” he says.
Engagement and knowledge about how the boat is functioning is important for Leonardo Bassilichi. He loves to spend time with his family and friends and to cruise around and view the surroundings. However, the best part of the day is when they all have to work together as a crew, when things have to happen fast and the mind needs to be alert. One of the things he enjoys the most is to maneuver his Amer 94’ in the harbor.
“As much as I like to stop the engine on open water and enjoy the calmness, I appreciate the adrenalin I get from focusing on docking my boat in a harbor even more. To me, it’s actually more relaxing to drive the boat than to lay down on deck in a sun chair,” says Leonardo Bassilichi.
Volvo Penta IPS is an innovative propulsion system, which has dual, counter-rotating dual propellers, individually steerable pods, as well as features like joystick docking and dynamic positioning to create an easy boating experience.
Since its launch in 2005, the size of yacht that the Volvo Penta IPS system can power has greatly increased. Today, the system is suitable for yachts from 30 up to 120 feet, and is consequently able to power a yacht such as the Amer 94’.
The boat is powered by three Volvo Penta D13-IPS1200s engines, which boast reduced fuel consumption and up to 30 per cent lower CO2 emissions compared to a traditional inboard shaft installation. These huge savings enable, on average, a 40 percent longer cruising range.
“Before I tried Volvo IPS, I was convinced that I didn’t need it, because I considered myself a good enough driver without it. Now when I have used it for two summers, I cannot go back to anything else,” concludes Leonardo Bassilichi.
