The perfect match for ‘Super Gloria’

The second episode of Volvo Penta’s ’Mighty Jobs’ series focuses on Kalmar ’Super Gloria’, one of the world’s largest industrial reach-stackers. Powered by a Volvo Penta D11 engine, the jewel in Kalmar’s hugely successful Gloria range helps to move large wind power sections that weigh up to 260 tonnes in northern Spain.

The perfect match for ‘Super Gloria’
The sheer size and weight of the wind turbine sections mean that transporting them is a team effort.
For operators such as Antonio Penafiel, using the Super Gloria requires careful precision and coordination.

The DRG1000-92-ZXS, nicknamed Kalmar ’Super Gloria’ is a world record holder. Having set the milestone of lifting over 130 tonnes back in 2015, this mighty machine has been put to work in ports and industrial sites all over Europe.

Kalmar and Volvo Penta worked closely to configure an engine to specifically match Gloria’s needs. You might think that a reachstacker of this magnitude would need a large engine to match. In fact, all it needs is the perfect balance of horsepower and torque. With the compact Volvo Penta D11 engine at its heart, fuel consumption is kept extremely low even during the heaviest lifting assignments.

Kalmar recently chose Volvo Penta to supply new Stage V solutions for a range of its machinery in Europe. The Stage V solutions will be installed in new models of Kalmar’s existing mobile equipment including reachstackers, empty container handlers, forklift trucks and terminal tractors.

As one of the world’s leading heavy-duty equipment manufacturers, Kalmar has been one of Volvo Penta’s biggest off-road industrial OEM customers for over thirty years, and has purchased diesel engines for its manufacturing bases in Europe, the US, and China.

Spanish logistics company Tadarsa owns two Super Gloria reach-stackers, which it uses for transporting large wind turbine sections, some of which can weigh up to 260 tonnes.
