Marine Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship Programme up to 4 years

All aspects of marine technology are embedded in this dedicated programme with a focus on electronics, diagnostics and computer management systems.

  • Working in a dealership – on the job training in a workshop, gaining hands on experience under the supervision of a trained mentor.
  • 10 day blocks of residential training at Bournemouth & Poole College covering everything from technology in marine engines to engine details and components.
  • Additional Volvo Penta specific training at Volvo Penta’s UK & Ireland HQ encompassing topics such as propulsion systems and the latest diagnostic techniques. Also service, maintenance installation & repair.

Based at Bournemouth & Poole College the fully equipped workshops allow you to work on the latest Volvo Penta Marine engines, drivelines and propulsion systems with the most up to date equipment and tools.

Where will I work?

In order to gain a place on the Apprenticeship programme, a local Volvo Penta Marine dealership must sponsor you. Here, you will be a full time employee of the dealer from day one and become part of the technical team while you train.

Where do I complete my training?

You will carry out your training at Bournemouth & Poole College. The centre is equipped with the latest Volvo Penta products and you will have use of the most up to date equipment and tools. You will also be trained by experienced lectures, with the latest industry knowledge.

Will I be a paid employee at the dealership?

Yes. All apprentices who are successful in gaining a position at a Volvo Penta Marine dealership will be contracted and paid as a full time employee with that dealer.

What qualifications do I achieve?

You will achieve a City & Guilds Advanced Marine Engineering Level 3 Diploma. The duration of this qualification will be 4 years. At the end of your fourth year, you will become a fully qualified Volvo Penta Marine Engineer. The qualification is recognised and highly valued throughout the marine industry.

Does my training stop once I’m qualified?

No, it doesn't. At Volvo Penta Marine you will be encouraged to increase your knowledge with future technical training courses, at their UK headquarters in Warwick. How frequently will I be on Block, and how long is a block?

Attendance at Bournemouth & Poole College will be on a block release basis. Apprentices will be required to attend college on a 10 day block, eight times a year. Accommodation and travel cost(s) will be covered by the company. Apprentices stay at the college Monday-Friday and can return home for the weekend.

Where will I stay during block?
Apprentices will stay in student accommodation.
How will I get to Bournemouth & Poole College?
Your travel arrangements will be arranged in advance by your dealership, and depending on where your dealership is based, you may be travelling by car, bus, train or air.
Driving
If apprentices choose to drive to college, you should ensure that their insurance covers for business use. Parking is available at the college free of charge.
Air
The nearest airport is Bournemouth/Southampton.
Train
The nearest train station to the college is Parkstone Train Station. Train travel will be booked in advance through the company.
