For the Stage IV and Tier 4 Final legislation, Volvo Penta has chosen to work with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology paired with a light Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. Apart from lowered emissions, this solution provides benefits such as easier installations, lowered maintenance costs, increased fuel efficiency and increased productivity.
Emissions are reduced by means of SCR technology. There are many ways to build an SCR system. At Volvo Penta, we’ve kept our SCR as simple and reliable as possible. While others have chosen more complex installations and C-EGR (cooled exhaust gas recirculation) systems – we use only two parts: SCR and light EGR. The benefits are obvious: the fewer components used, the easier the installation will be and the less risk of part failure or system malfunction.
Together with the EGR for optimization of the exhaust gas temperature, the engines fulfill environmental standards. Using proven, smart technology, the rigorously tested engine system meets both the demanding Stage IV (EU) and Tier 4 Final (US) emission reduction requirements and improves fuel efficiency by up to 5%. While most Stage IV/Tier 4 Final engines require a DPF (diesel particulate filter) or a DOC (diesel oxidation catalyst), Volvo Penta’s Stage IV/Tier 4 Final engines use only SCR.
Opting for a SCR solution to meet the Stage IV/Tier 4 Final emission legislation, comes with a number of benefits and advantages.
An engine with the Volvo SCR system has the same – or lower – cooling demands as one without SCR. Lower cooling demands equals lower noise levels and minimized costs for the radiator package. This enables manufacturers to house the cooling system in installations where space is limited.
The Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology and the SCR system turn more fuel energy into mechanical power – which leads to less heat rejection. This means that the power output can be maximized for any given engine displacement. The result is smaller engine sizes, reduced costs, and simplified installations.
For end users, the principal benefit of the SCR engines is unsurpassed fuel efficiency that cuts operating costs. Additionally, with the SCR system, where the catalytic converter is designed to last the life of the engine, costs for maintenance and downtime are also reduced.
