The unique Volvo Penta IPS system improves power and performance as well as onboard comfort for operators in both commercial and leisure applications. The system increases control, manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency and allows for a wide number of optional features and functions. The key to these exceptional qualities lies in the forward-facing, twin counter-rotating propellers with individually steerable IPS under the hull.
Marine Leisure Marine CommercialThanks to excellent fuel efficiency, first-class manoeuvrability and enhanced onboard comfort, Volvo Penta IPS meets just about any demand for powerboat applications. Each IPS installation is a complete and perfectly matched propulsion package – delivering optimised power and control in all conditions. Manoeuvrability, onboard comfort and reliable performance are all taken to a whole new level, while the layout of the IPS installation leads to a more compact engine room, creating more usable space onboard.
Thousands of applications with the distinctive, forward-facing, twin counter-rotating propellers and individually steerable IPS have been installed in hundreds of boat models worldwide.
A few of the many benefits when comparing to inboard shafts are:
It may seem like an impossible combination, but the IPS system manages to lower the fuel consumption, while improving the engines performance. In a matchup against inboard shafts of the same power, the differences are easy to register. The boat equipped with Volvo Penta IPS accelerates much faster and has a higher top speed.
When it comes to fuel economy, the benefits of Volvo Penta IPS are obvious – an impressive possibility of 30% reduction in fuel consumption at cruising speed, compared to inboard shaft engines. That translates into longer range by over 40%, and of course a huge drop in exhaust emissions.
Volvo Penta IPS is a complete and integrated propulsion system – from the helm station, via the engine, all the way to the propellers. This greatly increases quality and reliability. Designed with manoeuvrability as a key feature, Volvo Penta IPS offers a robust construction and, together with Volvo Penta Electronic Vessel Control (EVC), provides outstanding performance and safety. The EVC provides full monitoring, protection and diagnostics for both engine and transmission.
Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) monitors and connects all electronic systems on board:

The IPS system can be extended with unique features and functions that will make your life at sea even more enjoyable. By integrating your yachts engines and electronics through the Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) system, you’ll be able to experience intuitive Joystick Driving or the intelligent Dynamic Positioning System, everything easily monitored through the Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit System – a monitoring system that gathers all driver information and displays it on one or multiple high-tech displays.
Easy Boating OptionsManoeuvrability, onboard comfort and reliable performance – Volvo Penta IPS takes these characteristics to a whole new level. In addition, the layout of the IPS installation leads to a more compact, smaller engine room, creating considerably more usable space onboard.
The unique, type-approved Volvo Penta IPS system improves productivity and performance for operators who value manoeuvrability, fuel efficiency and on-board comfort. The key to these exceptional qualities lies in the forward-facing, twin counter-rotating propellers with individually steerable IPS under the hull.

Volvo Penta IPS is designed for easy installation and integration. Each IPS installation is a complete and perfectly matched propulsion package with all functions integrated, which dramatically shortens the installation time, reducing lead times.
The Volvo Penta IPS system is covered by type approval for the engine, IPS drive and EVC system in accordance with DNV’s rules for High-Speed & Light Craft, based on the SOLAS High-Speed code. Volvo Penta IPS 900 can also be supplied with a product certificate covering the complete system, from helm station to propeller, for vessels requiring fully classified machinery in accordance with DNV’s High-Speed & Light Craft rules.
The steerable IPS react immediately and precisely to driver commands, the turning radius is tight, and tracking is absolutely straight. All IPS vessels offer effortless and precise manoeuvring. This makes docking procedures time-efficient and cuts turnaround time.
Thanks to exhaust fume release through the IPSs, the low vibration of the twin counter rotating propellers and effective suspension, vibrations and noise levels are significantly reduced, thus increasing onboard comfort.
