The majority of engine manufacturers only introduce stage IV on latest engine platforms making it problematic having to mix different litre displacements, base engines and configurations. Volvo Penta offers complete commonality across the range. All models are developed around the same base engine design and available in stage II to stage IV emission levels. This puts the Volvo Penta offer in a unique position.
After having announced the D5 and D8 engines for stage IV/Tier 4F in 2012, Volvo Penta is now finalizing the work to complete its range of medium-duty engines. In 2014, these engines will be available also for the lower emission stages II and IIIA.
Based on the reliable and durable 11-16 L engines, the new 5 and 8 L engines share the same base engine philosophy; an in-line 4-6 cylinder design with components such as turbocharger located on the right-side on all models from the smallest to the largest one.
All engines share the same electronics platform. This means that it is possible to communicate with the same protocol regardless if it is a 5L engine or 16L engine, or if it is a stage II version or stage IV.
The technology choice for the new emission stages is a well-proven SCR system used extensively within the Volvo Group, without DOC or DPF with the need of regeneration. Volvo Penta offers all necessary components from a variety of DEF-tanks, SCR-muffler sizes to wiring harnesses and cooling systems. “At Volvo Penta, we are well aware of the high costs related to the engine installation; with this ‘package solution’ we are able to add extra flexibility to the installation – something we know will enable manufacturers to make valuable cost savings in terms of development costs and testing”, says Krikor Abraham at Volvo Penta Industrial Product Planning.
For the engines in the new medium-duty range the displacement is increased compared with previous versions and the base engine design is now more like the heavy duty engines. This will offer both current and future customers improved performance when it comes to fuel efficiency and engine block stiffness. Higher torque at low speed will be another prominent quality.
The fuel system for the medium-duty engine platform will be certified according to ISO7840, which enhance safety – one of the Volvo core values.
All in all, this means that Volvo Penta will be able to offer a complete program for industrial engines complying with all existing non-road emission stages.
