(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) – Sept. 11, 2019 – Volvo Penta of the Americas recently partnered with RK Power Generator Corporation to host technical courses on power generators in Puerto Rico in their event “RK Power School.” Technicians, engineers and management from more than 80 companies attended the three-day school, which was held at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Caguas, Puerto Rico, earlier this summer.
The training sessions in this event covered diesel gensets, alternators and automatic transfer switches and control systems, and included other RK Power Generator partner companies. The curriculum covered basic product information, troubleshooting, innovative solutions, best practices and problem solving.
Hurricane Maria in 2017 devastated Puerto Rico’s grid infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands of homes, businesses and institutions without electricity for many months and creating a massive need for off-grid power generation systems. Although electricity has now been fully restored across the island, the demand for backup power sources remains high for businesses, schools, hospitals, banks, hotels, utilities and government facilities as well as private homes.
“The power generation industry in Puerto Rico received significant growth after Hurricane Maria. This growth created a need to train and educate people and companies in power generation technologies. To that end, RK Power Generator took the lead in developing a technical training program for business partners, dealers, electricians, government officials, decision makers, engineers and industry leaders,” said Ruben Aguilar, co-founder and general manager of RK Power Generator.
“Technical training for dealers, technicians and end users is a vital component in our customer service commitment,” said Darren Tasker, vice president for industrial at Volvo Penta of the Americas. “This three-day seminar organized by RK Power Generator was a well-planned and thoroughly executed event that will bring widespread benefits to suppliers and users of powergen equipment in Puerto Rico to be better prepared in the event of future disruptions to the electric grid.”
RK Power Generator Corp. is the only company manufacturing Volvo Penta-powered gensets in the Caribbean. The company was founded in 2005 and incorporated in July 2010. The company has more than 100 employees located in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
“Volvo Penta is a world-leading brand in power generation engines, and their clean, reliable engines are at the heart of our portfolio of commercial and industrial generator product offerings in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean,” Aguilar said.
