Going for gold

Pogo is one of Alaska’s top gold mines. More than 2,500 tonnes of ore is extracted every day in 30 miles of underground tunnels.

Here, a Volvo Penta-powered underground loader works two shifts, up to 20 hours a day. Volvo Penta engines are good business for Pogo, due to exceptional uptime, excellent ventilation rates and low emissions.

Winter temperatures in the mine can plummet to -60°C, but with the low air exchange requirements of Volvo Penta engines, Pogo spends less money on heating ventilation air.

The Volvo Penta Tier 4 Interim TAD1361VE engine uses selective catalytic reduction technology, which reduces NOx levels by half.
