Here is the world’s first semi-hybrid inland waterway tanker. She is proof that it’s possible to build a tanker that complies with future emission levels at the price of a conventional vessel.
Environmental considerations come at no extra cost. The skipper can optimize efficiency at all times, choosing between diesel-electric, diesel direct or combined propulsion modes. The setup reduces NOx emissions by up to 90% and particulates by about 40%.
Besides the two diesel engines for propulsion the Volvo Penta installation includes two gensets generating power for on-board electricity, thruster, cargo pumps and two electric engines that form part of the propulsion system.
