Battery Management System installed on yacht with e-Key

Battery Management System

Car-alike Simplicity for Boat Owners

Battery Management System & e-Key Remote

Forget heavy bunches of keys and finding main circuit breakers. The Battery Management System – with e-Key remote – allows you to manage your onboard electrical system remotely. By pressing the ON button the system powers up with car functionality and at the same time authorizes you as the user of the boat. In combination with EVC, the Battery Management System gives you a complete overview of battery status in user displays conveniently located in up to six stations onboard.

Easy,Trouble-free Boating

The system offers you a number of smart features such as battery protection and automatic start aid. This function temporally borrows energy from the auxiliary battery to ensure you have the power to start up your engine.

Reliable and Easy to Monitor

Many boats need multiple voltage meters for its many batteries, which are often located in different places. With the Battery Management Display, all this information and more can be accessed in one display in the boat’s cockpit at any time. The same information is also available in the ordinary user display at the helm when powered up. This includes voltage, current flows, time to full/empty and status of battery health.

e-Key Remote

With the e‐Key Remote a feature of the Volvo Penta Battery Management System, it's possible to control the boat’s entire electrical system at a distance of up to 100 meters, before boarding and when leaving the boat. The functions and possibilities of the e‐Key Remote are similar to a modern car key where one key and one single press of a button is enough to get started.

A Multi-function Key

Forget heavy bunches of keys and finding main circuit breakers. With e-Key remote you control your onboard electrical system remotely. The e-Key Remote is connected and integrated into the boat’s entire driveline. It is also possible to connect additional electrical equipment to the same remote key, such as deck light, gangway, and sunroof or anchor winches – which can then be switched on before you even step foot onboard.

High flexibility

No matter the number of engines, the entire electrical system of the boat is controlled with a single key and its signal reaches up to 100 meters. It’s possible to connect up to four keys, for individual users, to the system.

You are in Charge

When approaching the boat from the jetty one simple press on the e-Key Remote will authorize the user, switch on the battery supply and power up the electrical vessel control system (EVC). Once onboard, just start the engine and you can cast off. When leaving the boat, one press on the e-Key Remote will power down the system to a locked state and switch off the battery supply.

Theft protection
The e-Key Remote also provides effective theft protection since every e-Key is connected to the vessel with a unique identifier. Only a valid key can be used to operate the system, and a vessel can be paired with up to four e-Keys.

Boat-builder and Driver Benefits

The Battery Management System offers a number of benefits. The boat builder will save installation time and effort, and will acquire a more robust installation. The driver will benefit from added functionality, easy‐to‐use and car‐like integration, and superior control.

A Modular, Fully Customized System

Four components make up the Battery Management System: the Battery Control Unit, the 2.5"Battery Management Display, the Battery Sensor, and the e‐Key Remote. Together, these components are easily combined to a fully customized battery management system.

e‐Key Remote

With the new e-Key Remote from Volvo Penta, the driver will be able to control the boat’s entire electrical system in the easiest possible way, before boarding and when leaving the boat. ”The functions and possibilities of the e-Key Remote are similar to a modern car key where one key and one single press of a button is enough to get started”, says Anders Thorin, Product Manager at Volvo Penta. It’s possible to connect up to four keys, for individual users, to the system – and of course the e-Key is made for marine condition and its signal reaches up to 100 meters.

For the boat builders the e-Key Remote and Battery Management – that can be used with or without the Volvo Penta EVC system – leads to easier and faster installations of the electrical system. Instead, the entire electrical system of the boat is controlled with one single key, no matter the number of engines.

Unlock your boat, turn on the lights, remote control the gangway or open the sunroof – all with a single press of a button.

Battery Management Display

The 2.5" Battery Management Display is used to set up the Battery Management System, and to act as a remote control of the Battery Control Module. With the Battery Management Display, the driver can monitor voltage, current flow, state of charge, time to full/empty, state of battery health and warning messages.

  • Serves as a remote battery control.
  • Presents information for up to 4 drivelines and 12 different battery groups.
  • Menus are dynamic depending on the installation.
  • Battery voltage and menus for battery control and settings are shown as standard.
  • Displays warning messages and other pop‐up messages.
  • At start or during standby mode the display reverts to the view last shown.
Battery Control Module

The Battery Control Module contains a number of inputs, outputs and components that handle the power supply to the engine and accessory consumers on board. Acting as the main hub for the boat’s electrical system, it makes the battery status reliable and easier to monitor from a display at the helm. System parameters can be preset so that information on charge state, battery health, time to full/empty, voltage, and current are all easily accessible.

  • One Battery Control Module is needed for each engine.
  • The battery supply switches can be operated on the Battery Control Module, via the Battery Management Display, or via an external button panel.
  • A cross‐over switch enables one battery to borrow energy from the other.
  • All three switches are of solid‐state technology ensuring optimal durability and reliability with minimal voltage drop without relays or moving parts.
  • The Battery Control Module also contains a main fuse holder.
  • Two 20A constant outputs provide easy installation of constant loads such at bilge pumps that need access to power even when all main switches are off.
Battery Sensor

The Battery Sensor adds the most options for customizing a Battery Management System installation. Hooked up to the batteries, it provides the driver with detailed information about voltage, current flow, state of charge, time before the battery is empty or fully charged, and information about the battery’s life‐span.

  • The Battery Sensor monitors battery charge, status, current and voltage.
  • Measured values are shown in the Battery Management Display.
  • The Battery Sensor is dimensioned for up to 300 A load.
  • Up to two Battery Sensors can be connected to the Battery Control Module.
  • The Battery Sensor works with most batteries: AGM, GEL or flooded battery.
